Senior Spotlight: Alex Shores
By Alex McArver
Alex Shores is a dual major in Film and Television along with Behavior and Health on top of being the President of the DKA Beta Chapter at BU for the past year. Shores admits that balancing all his responsibilities as president with his coursework caused him to miss class a few times, but most of the time he was able to work his schedule around DKA. He admits he loves DKA as a fun and creative outlet so he spent a lot of time over the last year focusing on his presidency.
One production Shores felt he learned a lot from was working sound and boom operating on Miss Fortune in the Fall of 2022. He said, “It was cool, honestly, seeing people so inspired and driven like that.” Then, a year later, he worked on his thesis film for Kilachand, and despite it not being an official DKA production, it was an almost all-DeKA-filled crew. Shores was the writer and director on the project, but explained, “So many DeKAs gave me feedback on the script, helped on set, and helped in post. That's the most I've ever learned from a film project and I learned everything there from DeKAs.”
Shores admits that when he first came to BU the film program was much harder than he expected. He was confident going into college since he already had prior experience with a camera, but he said, “I didn’t realize how much goes into lighting, cinematography, sound mixing, and so coming to BU and seeing so many sets, I was just blown away by how incredible people are, but also how much I needed to learn.”

His freshmen year, with the pandemic, was difficult because everyone had to get a Covid test every 3 days to attend classes and go to the dining halls. Every student carried a green badge if they tested positive, yellow if they hadn’t been tested, or red if they had Covid.
Shores admits at times it was hard for him to choose between all the different interests he wanted to pursue while he also focused on classes and spent time with his friends. There were so many projects he hoped to be a part of but he realistically couldn’t do them all. He said, “College gives you so many opportunities at some point, for me it was junior year, you have to start picking and choosing what you want to focus on.” Outside of his interests in film and health Shores was also able to pursue nonprofit work which he loved, including being a development intern with Make-A-Wish.
Shores said his number one piece of advice for anyone just starting at BU would be to go to Splash, the student club fair, and go to as many initiation meetings for any clubs you have even a remote interest in. Then by your second or third year of college, you will have a strong idea of which clubs you really want to devote your time to.

As Shores goes on to his next chapter outside of BU he plans to continue living in Boston with fellow graduate and DKA member Liam Henson. Shores explained he wants to continue pursuing his interests in film and nonprofit work and hopefully contribute to making a difference in some way. He said, “The biggest lesson I've learned from college is that after four years, everyone I talked to when it’s their senior year, they don't know what they want to do anymore. That's kind of a relaxing thing when you accept it.” He admits he understands that big transitions can be bumpy, but he’s excited about all the opportunities available to him, and while it may feel daunting, he’s excited to find out about jobs he’s never heard of before.
