Senior Spotlight: Liam Henson
By Alex McArver

Liam Henson is a senior studying Psychology who rushed DKA in the Spring of 2022 as a sophomore. Henson admitted he became much more involved with DKA in his senior year when he took on the Standards Board position of Risk Management Chair. Alongside balancing DKA with his course workload, he also held an on-campus job at the BU Community Service Center. “I recently finished working for the Community Service Center. I was a co-program manager for Alternative Service Breaks (ASB), a service program that takes place during Spring break every year; ASB volunteers get to travel to a location of their choice for one week where they engage in service with one of our community partners...and coordinating everything takes about a year,” Henson explained.

Henson said he learned a lot from directing this intense year-long project. He explained that he gained invaluable insights from collaborating with his co-program manager and leadership team of program chairs and coordinators they recruited, like Kat Harmon and Jairo Zelaya, who are also DKA members. “It taught me to be less afraid of saying no to people and to not feel bad about myself when I do so,” Henson said.

Henson explained that when he first arrived at BU in January 2021, not only was it during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he also arrived as a CGS student. Since then, he has honed in on his interests in psychology and plans to specialize in clinical family therapy after graduation. “I wanted to find a professor who had a PhD in counseling,” Henson admitted, “I couldn't find a professor who was really like that, and I realized, oh yeah, because BU is a research university first and foremost. They prioritize that, so of course, every class is going to be heavy on neuroscience, or something closely related.” Following graduation, Henson plans to begin work as a therapeutic mentor for Eliot Community Human Services.

Henson explained that when he first came to college, he initially wanted to pursue a film major; however, despite his change in plans, he was still happy devoting his time to DKA because he loved the community and the connections he had fostered there. Henson rushed with his roommate from last semester, Andy Bae. Henson said, “Living with him even for just one semester, I learned so much because he'll just talk about cameras, his favorite DPs, and people he had met from conferences...That's why I stay in DKA and the film community. I want to be around devoted and passionate people like him because they make the film industry sound exciting and a career in it one worth pursuing; people like him encourage me to pursue film again someday.”

Henson also explored his interest in public health during his semester abroad in Geneva, Switzerland. He explained that he was considering public health as a minor when he decided to intern at the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), an NGO in Geneva. “I really enjoyed the experience,” Henson admitted, “I was at an NGO that focused on healthcare equity with cancer...and I worked alongside really amazing people.”
